Chris studies Economics and Geography at the University of Exeter and has spent the past 12 months on placement at AlphaSights London.

It’s not often you hear the words “hard work” and “fun” in the same sentence. Looking back on the last 12 months, I would definitely describe my placement at AlphaSights as both of those things. Here’s what I think you need to know if you’re thinking about applying for a placement or internship at AlphaSights.

1) It’s true when they say AlphaSights is fast paced

One of the key things that appealed to me about AlphaSights: the high-speed and constantly-changing environment you get when you work at one of the fastest growing companies in the UK. In 12 months, I’ve worked in a team that has grown by 50%, experienced the move of the entire London team to a larger, and all round cooler office in the City, and said goodbye to team members moving out to Hamburg to set up our first Germany-based business. The skills I have developed through handling client demands under pressure, negotiating with C-level executives and effectively working on tight deadlines across offices and time zones, have been invaluable.

2) You will think fast, and learn fast

After previously interning in slower, more conventional companies, I was eager to take on the challenge of working in a commercial role at a growth company. The role of Junior Associate was exactly what I was after. I was treated as a full-time employee from the beginning. I had access to the same training, the same targets to hit, and had the same level of responsibility as many of my full-time peers. Given the high growth and international nature of this business, I was often working on multilingual projects. For this I worked collaboratively with my team, which boasts a diverse international background (nine different languages spoken!). I also managed projects for clients based in multiple geographies, each of which required working with professionals from a range of industries - from renewable energy to FinTech. Every day was different from the one before; each project was different from the next, and this lack of routine was exactly what I was looking for in a placement.

3) You will meet people who will change the way you see the world of work

As well as everything I learned on the job, the social side of my experience changed the way I perceived the working world. Moving to London with just a handful of friends, knowing the role I was taking on would be challenging and pressured at times, made me anxious that my social life would take a hit. Looking back, I’d say to anyone having similar thoughts to not even contemplate it: I joined AlphaSights with 15 international and open-minded colleagues, many of whom were living and working in London for the first time. Aside from monthly team outings (read: roller disco) and annual office-wide Christmas and Summer events, I also got to know others by training with the AlphaSights Football Team “The Russellmen” and mixed Netball Team “The Net Credits”. Working at AlphaSights has enabled me to create lasting working relationships, and friendships too.
